level

Definition

Level" in dance means how high or low a dancer is moving, like when they jump high, stand normally, or get down low to the floor.

Crawling on the floor is a low-level movement, while jumping in the air is a high-level one.

How to teach this in 30 seconds

Try this analogy: A dance level is like how animals move — a snake is low to the ground, a dog is in the middle, and a bird flies up high.

Ask your child: Can you make a shape with your body way down low?

Common mix-up: Kids may think a dance level is about how hard a move is, like in a game. In dance, level is simply about how high or low your body is from the floor.

Examples

  • Slithering on your belly like a snake is a low-level move.
  • Walking or marching with bent knees is a medium-level move.
  • Reaching your arms up to the sky while on your tiptoes is a high-level move.

level is a term used in Ontario’s Kindergarten to Grade 8 curriculum.
