Manipulations" in dance are small changes made to a movement or a sequence of steps, like doing it faster or with a different arm position, and sometimes they're just ideas that aren't actually performed.
Taking a simple dance step like a leap and performing it in slow motion is a manipulation of time.

Try this analogy: Manipulations are like adding a filter or effect to a video you recorded to change its mood or style.
Ask your child: How could you change this one move to make it look sad instead of happy?
Common mix-up: Some may hear 'manipulation' and think of making up a brand new dance. It’s really about taking an existing set of moves and exploring small ways to change it, like altering the speed or direction.
Examples
- Performing a sequence of arm movements while facing a different direction in the room.
- Changing a sharp, quick turn into a soft, flowing one.
- Doing a dance phrase at a low level, close to the floor, instead of standing up.
