physical fitness

Definition

Physical fitness means your child is healthy and strong enough to do their daily activities easily, like playing and running, and it helps them stay healthy in the long run.

Having the stamina to play at recess, ride your bike, and still have energy for homework shows good physical fitness.

How to teach this in 30 seconds

Try this analogy: Physical fitness is like charging a battery for your body, giving you the power to play all day without getting tired.

Ask your child: What activities make your body feel strong and full of energy?

Common mix-up: Kids might think fitness is just about being the fastest runner or best at sports. True fitness is about having enough energy for all your daily activities and feeling healthy.

Examples

  • Being able to carry a full backpack without getting tired shows strength.
  • Running around during a game of tag without needing to stop right away shows endurance.
  • Being able to easily bend and touch your toes shows flexibility.

physical fitness is a term used in Ontario’s Kindergarten to Grade 8 curriculum.
