Automaticity means your child can do something like basic math facts so easily and quickly that they don't even have to think about it. It's like riding a bike without thinking about pedaling or steering.
When your child sees the word 'and' and reads it instantly without sounding it out, that's automaticity.
How to teach this in 30 seconds
Try this analogy: Automaticity is like singing a song you know by heart — the words just pop out without you having to think about them.
Ask your child: Point to a word you know as fast as a blink.
Common mix-up: Kids may think good reading means carefully sounding out every word. Automaticity with common words actually frees up their mind to understand the story.
