land claims

Definition

Land claims are when Indigenous groups (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit) ask for their traditional lands and resources back, or for recognition of their rights to those lands, often because of broken promises or unfair dealings in the past. These claims can also involve their right to govern themselves.

land claims is a term used in Ontario’s Kindergarten to Grade 8 curriculum.
