A number line is a straight line with numbers marked on it in order, like a ruler, which helps children see how numbers relate to each other.
To find the distance between -3 and 4, you can count the 7 spaces between them on a number line.
How to teach this in 30 seconds
Try this analogy: A number line is like a thermometer lying on its side, showing numbers getting bigger, smaller, and even going below zero.
Ask your child: Where would you place the number one and a half on this line?
Common mix-up: Kids often think number lines are just for counting whole numbers. A number line is a tool for showing all kinds of numbers, including fractions, decimals, and negative numbers.
Examples
- Placing 0.5 on a number line exactly halfway between 0 and 1.
- Showing that -5 is less than -2 because it is further to the left on the number line.
