order of operations

Definition

Order of operations is a set of rules that tells us the correct sequence to solve a math problem with multiple steps, like always doing calculations inside brackets first.

In the expression 12 ÷ 3 × 2, we solve from left to right because division and multiplication are partners, so 12 ÷ 3 = 4, then 4 × 2 = 8.

How to teach this in 30 seconds

Try this analogy: The order of operations is like the instructions for building a complex Lego set, where you must complete certain steps in a specific sequence for the final model to come out right.

Ask your child: In this expression, which part gets to 'go first' according to the rules?

Common mix-up: Kids often think multiplication always comes before division. The rule is that multiplication and division are partners, so you solve them in the order they appear from left to right.

Examples

  • In (7 − 2) × 5, the brackets tell us to do 7 − 2 first.
  • For 3 + 4², the exponent is solved first, making it 3 + 16.
  • In 10 − 4 + 2, we solve left to right: 10 − 4 is 6, then 6 + 2 is 8.
