posture

Definition

Posture is simply how your child holds their body when sitting, standing, or moving around.

When acting out a story, a child might slump their shoulders to show a sad posture.

How to teach this in 30 seconds

Try this analogy: Posture is like how a toy soldier stands up tall and straight versus how a sleepy teddy bear slumps over.

Ask your child: How does your body feel when you stand like a superhero?

Common mix-up: Kids often think posture is just about sitting up straight. Posture is a way to show feelings or character with your whole body.

Examples

  • Puffing out your chest to show a proud posture, like a king.
  • Hunching over and making yourself small to show a shy or scared posture.

posture is a term used in Ontario’s Kindergarten to Grade 8 curriculum.
