Proportional reasoning is understanding how quantities change in relation to each other, like knowing if you double a recipe, you need to double all the ingredients. It's about seeing how things scale up or down in a consistent way.
If 3 pencils cost $2, then 6 pencils will cost $4 because you are buying twice as many pencils for twice the price.
How to teach this in 30 seconds
Try this analogy: Proportional reasoning is like scaling up a recipe — if you double the flour, you have to double the sugar too.
Ask your child: If a map says 1 inch is 10 miles, how many miles would 3 inches be?
Common mix-up: Kids may think you just add the same amount to each side. Proportional reasoning is about multiplying or dividing each quantity by the same number to keep the relationship balanced.
Examples
- If a car travels 60 miles in 1 hour, it will travel 30 miles in half an hour.
- If you mix 1 part blue paint with 3 parts yellow, you need 2 parts blue for 6 parts yellow to get the same shade of green.
