seigneurial system

Definition

The seigneurial system was how land was divided and used in early Canada, where large landowners (like nobles or the church) rented out smaller plots to farmers. It was a bit like the old feudal system where lords owned the land and peasants worked it.

seigneurial system is a term used in Ontario’s Kindergarten to Grade 8 curriculum.
