A table of values is a chart that lists pairs of numbers, like an X and Y coordinate, to show how two things are related to each other.
For the rule y = x + 2, a table of values might show that when x is 1, y is 3, and when x is 2, y is 4.
How to teach this in 30 seconds
Try this analogy: A table of values is like a two-column list tracking how much money you earn based on the hours you work.
Ask your child: What's the rule that connects the number in the first column to the second?
Common mix-up: Kids may think a table of values is just a list of random numbers. The key is that every pair of numbers in the table is connected by the same underlying rule or equation.
Examples
- Each row in the table, like (3, 5), gives you the coordinates for one point on a graph.
