EQAO Grade 3 Math: A Calm Parent's Guide to Getting Ready

The EQAO Primary Division assessment happens near the end of Grade 3. For most families the biggest thing to know is this: it's a check-in, not a pass-or-fail exam, and it doesn't affect your child's report-card marks. Your job as a parent is mostly to keep it low-stress and familiar.

What the Grade 3 math assessment covers

It's built from the Ontario math your child has done in Grades 1 to 3, across five strands:

• Number — counting, place value, addition and subtraction, early fractions
• Algebra — patterns and simple relationships
• Data — simple charts and graphs
• Spatial Sense — shapes, measurement, and time
• Financial Literacy — coins and the value of money

The digital format, for younger kids

Grade 3 students take the assessment on a computer, with built-in tools like text-to-speech and a highlighter. The math is split into short stages with breaks, so no one sits for too long. Question types include tapping a choice, dragging items into place, and typing short answers. A little practice with these tools beforehand makes the screen feel friendly rather than new.

How to help without the stress

At this age, confidence is the goal:

• Keep practice short — ten minutes is plenty.
• Talk about math in everyday moments: sharing snacks (fractions), counting change (money), reading a clock (time).
• Let mistakes be normal. "Let's see how you got there" beats "that's wrong" every time.
• Make sure test week has early bedtimes and a good breakfast — those help more than extra worksheets.
