Khanmigo retails at ~$4 USD/month. Canadian families can't actually buy it.
Khan Academy's learner subscription is US-billing-only — the only access route for a Canadian child today is through a US-licensed school. SmartStudy is the Canadian-curriculum, parent-surface, UDL-grade equivalent that Canadian families can actually purchase. Here's what the gap pays for:
Billing built the way we'd want it for our own families.
These aren't policy promises — they're architectural rules. Each one is enforced in code before it's enforced in the ToS.
Single-tap cancel
One tap from your account home or Stripe Customer Portal. No retention loops. No "are you sure?" screens.
60-day price notice
Any price change is announced 60 days before it takes effect — by email and in-app banner.
12-month grandfathering
Annual subscribers active at the time of a price change keep their old price for 12 months.
No kid-visible pricing
The child surface contains no price, no purchase prompt, no "upgrade" CTA. All billing UI is gated behind parent login.
No dark-pattern renewal
Annual auto-renewal is preceded by an email reminder 7 days prior. Refund within 48 hours of any charge is no-questions-asked.
Failed payment → free tier, not lockout
A failed payment drops you to the free tier so your child keeps learning. No "your account is locked" pressure.
No kid-targeted retention
The child is never told the parent has cancelled, never asked to lobby for re-subscription, never shown "your parent is letting your subscription expire."
Audit-logged billing
Every billing change is recorded and exportable on request.
Full refund within 48 hours of any charge
No questions asked. Annual subscribers also get prorated refunds within 30 days. All refunds processed through Stripe.
