Definition

Code is like a set of instructions you give to a computer to tell it what to do, similar to a recipe or a building plan.

An arrow pointing right can be a code that tells a character in a game to move right.

How to teach this in 30 seconds

Try this analogy: Code is like a set of secret instructions for a robot friend, telling it exactly what to do step-by-step.

Ask your child: What code would make a robot take two steps forward?

Common mix-up: Kids might think code is just random letters and numbers. Code is a specific language of instructions that tells a device what to do in order.

Examples

  • A code like 'hop, hop, clap' is a set of instructions for a person to follow.
  • Pressing the 'play' button is a code that tells the device to start the video.
