composite number

Definition

A composite number is a whole number that can be divided evenly by numbers other than just one and itself. For example, 8 is a composite number because it can be divided by 2 and 4, not just 1 and 8.

The number 6 is composite because it can be made by multiplying 2 × 3.

How to teach this in 30 seconds

Try this analogy: A composite number is like a box of cookies that can be arranged into different rectangular shapes, not just a single long line.

Ask your child: How many different rectangles can you make with 12 tiles?

Common mix-up: Kids often think all odd numbers are prime. A composite number can be odd, like 9, which can be made by multiplying 3 x 3.

Examples

  • The number 9 is composite because it can be made by multiplying 3 × 3.
  • 10 is a composite number because it can be made by multiplying 2 × 5.
