A list of classmates' favourite pets (dog, cat, cat, fish, dog) is a data set.
How to teach this in 30 seconds
Try this analogy: A data set is like a collection of everyone's answers to one question, like asking 'what is your favourite animal?'
Ask your child: If we ask our family their favourite snack, what answers might we get?
Common mix-up: Kids may think a data set is just a jumble of numbers or words. The key is that all the pieces of data are related to the same single question.
