Division is when you split a total amount into equal groups or figure out how many equal groups you can make from a total. It's the opposite of multiplying.
Sharing 10 cookies among 5 friends so each friend gets 2 cookies is an example of division.
How to teach this in 30 seconds
Try this analogy: Division is like sharing a bag of crackers equally with your friends to see how many each person gets.
Ask your child: How can we share these 6 blocks fairly between us?
Common mix-up: Kids might confuse division with simple subtraction. Division is really about finding out how many equal groups you can make from a total.
Examples
- Putting 12 crayons into boxes that hold 4 crayons each means you will fill 3 boxes.
- Dealing 8 cards between 2 players so each player gets 4 cards.
