Space in art is simply the empty areas around, between, or within objects in a picture. Artists can make things look closer or farther away by changing their size, how much they overlap, or their color.
In a drawing of a sun, the empty sky around it is the space.
How to teach this in 30 seconds
Try this analogy: Space in a picture is like the empty floor around your toys when you play.
Ask your child: Where is the empty space in this picture?
Common mix-up: Kids may think space is just the empty, leftover part of the page. Space is actually an important part of the drawing that helps the main objects stand out.
