In dance, "space" is about where and how a dancer moves, like using different directions, levels (high or low), and pathways.
Making your body big like a starfish uses a lot of space, while curling into a small ball uses very little.
How to teach this in 30 seconds
Try this analogy: Space is like the empty part of the playground where you can run around, climb high, or crawl low.
Ask your child: How can you make your body take up a lot of space?
Common mix-up: Kids might think 'space' means outer space with stars and planets. In dance, space is the area right around your body that you can move through.
Examples
- Moving on a zig-zag path across the floor.
- Reaching your arms up high and then touching your toes down low.
