technique

Definition

Technique in dance means the specific skills a dancer uses to perform steps and movements correctly, like how a ballet dancer uses their feet and body in a certain way. It also refers to the unique style of movement that defines a particular type of dance.

Learning to point your toes while you leap is an example of dance technique.

How to teach this in 30 seconds

Try this analogy: Technique is like learning the special ways to move your body for a dance, like how to point your toes or hold your arms.

Ask your child: Show me how you can make your toes point.

Common mix-up: Kids may think dance is just about wiggling however you feel. Technique is learning the specific building blocks, like how to stand or turn, that help you dance.

Examples

  • Holding your arms in a rounded shape for ballet.
  • Keeping your back straight and tall while you move.
  • Learning how to bend your knees before you jump.

technique is a term used in Ontario’s Kindergarten to Grade 8 curriculum.
