A unit is a standard amount we use to measure things, like an inch for length or a minute for time. It helps us compare how big or small something is.
When you measure a book with paper clips, the 'unit' is one paper clip.
How to teach this in 30 seconds
Try this analogy: A unit is like a single Lego block you use over and over to measure how long your toy car is.
Ask your child: How many paper clips long is your crayon?
Common mix-up: Kids may think you can switch what you're measuring with, like using a block then a crayon. A unit is the same single thing used over and over again.
