A unit fraction is a fraction where the top number is always 1, like 1/2 or 1/4. It represents one single piece of a whole.
If you share a granola bar equally with a friend, your one piece is the unit fraction 1/2.
How to teach this in 30 seconds
Try this analogy: A unit fraction is like one single slice of a pizza, no matter how many equal slices you cut the whole pizza into.
Ask your child: If we cut this into three equal parts, what is one part called?
Common mix-up: Kids may think of a fraction like 3/4 as one single thing. A unit fraction helps them see that 3/4 is really made of three smaller pieces called one-fourths.
Examples
- One slice of a pizza cut into 8 equal pieces is the unit fraction 1/8.
- One of the three equal sections of a drawing is the unit fraction 1/3.
