A fraction is a way to show parts of a whole, like when you cut a pizza into slices and take one slice, that's a fraction of the whole pizza. It tells you how much of something you have compared to the total.
One slice of a pizza cut into 4 equal pieces is 1/4.
How to teach this in 30 seconds
Try this analogy: A fraction is like sharing a pizza — each piece is part of the whole.
Ask your child: If we cut this into four equal parts, what fraction is one piece?
Common mix-up: Kids may think a bigger denominator means a bigger piece. More parts means each piece is smaller.

- Half an apple is 1/2.
- Sharing a chocolate bar with a friend so each person gets one of the two equal pieces is 1/2.
