A rate tells you how much of one thing there is compared to another, especially when they're measured in different ways, like how many kilometers you travel in an hour.
Saying you read two pages every minute is a rate that compares pages and time.
How to teach this in 30 seconds
Try this analogy: A rate is like describing how fast you walk by counting how many steps you take in ten seconds.
Ask your child: How many hops can you do in five seconds?
Common mix-up: Kids may focus on just one of the numbers, like '10 steps.' A rate always connects two different kinds of measurements, like steps and seconds.

- Putting away four blocks every ten seconds is a rate.
