receiving

Definition

Receiving" is when your child uses their body to safely stop or control a moving object, like catching a ball or trapping it with their foot.

When your child watches a beanbag fly through the air and moves to catch it, they are receiving.

How to teach this in 30 seconds

Try this analogy: Receiving is like making a soft nest with your hands for a ball to land in.

Ask your child: How do you get your body ready to catch a ball?

Common mix-up: Kids may think catching is just about their hands. Receiving is a whole-body skill that starts with your eyes and feet.

Examples

  • Stopping a rolling ball by trapping it with a foot.
  • Catching a large playground ball by hugging it to your body.
  • Scooping up a beanbag from the floor as it slides toward you.

receiving is a term used in Ontario’s Kindergarten to Grade 8 curriculum.
