Cartesian plane

Definition

Imagine a flat surface, like a piece of paper, with two number lines crossing in the middle – one going left-to-right and one going up-and-down. You can use these lines to find the exact spot of anything on that surface, like giving directions using two numbers.

To find the point (3, 2), you start at the origin (0, 0), move 3 units to the right along the x-axis, and then 2 units up.

How to teach this in 30 seconds

Try this analogy: The Cartesian plane is like the grid in a game of Battleship, where you give two numbers to find a specific spot on the board.

Ask your child: To get to point (2, 5), how many steps do you take across, and how many up?

Common mix-up: Kids often mix up the order and go up first, then across. The rule is to go across on the x-axis first, then up or down on the y-axis, like walking down a hall then climbing stairs.

Examples

  • Plotting the corners of a square at points (1, 1), (1, 3), (3, 3), and (3, 1).
  • Using a map where the park is at D5, meaning you go across to column D and up to row 5.
  • The point (4, 0) is on the horizontal axis because you move 4 across and 0 up.

Cartesian plane is a term used in Ontario’s Kindergarten to Grade 8 curriculum.
