Equivalent fractions are different ways to write a fraction that all represent the same amount or part of a whole, like how 1/2 is the same as 2/4.
One half of a pizza (1/2) is the exact same amount of food as two quarters of the same pizza (2/4), making them equivalent fractions.
How to teach this in 30 seconds
Try this analogy: Equivalent fractions are like cutting a sandwich into two pieces and eating one, or cutting it into four pieces and eating two — you eat the same amount of sandwich either way.
Ask your child: If I eat 1/2 of a cracker and you eat 2/4 of yours, did we eat the same amount?
Common mix-up: Kids often think fractions with larger numbers are automatically bigger. With equivalent fractions, different numbers can actually represent the exact same size piece of the whole.
Examples
- Folding a piece of paper into 3 equal parts and shading 1 part (1/3) covers the same space as shading 2 parts of a paper folded into 6 parts (2/6).
- Knowing that 3/6 of a chocolate bar is the exact same amount as 1/2 of the chocolate bar.
