static balance

Definition

Static balance is when your child can hold their body still in one position without falling over, like standing on one leg.

Standing on one leg with arms out to the side is an example of static balance.

How to teach this in 30 seconds

Try this analogy: Static balance is like playing freeze dance and holding your body perfectly still in a fun shape.

Ask your child: Can you stand on one foot like a statue?

Common mix-up: Kids may think balance is only for moving, like on a scooter. Static balance is the skill of holding your body completely still.

Examples

  • Holding a tree pose in yoga.
  • Pausing in a 'freeze' position during a game of freeze dance.
