preparation

Definition

Preparation is like getting ready to jump or throw, where you position your body and get balanced before you actually start the action.

Bending your knees and getting your feet set before you try to catch a ball is the preparation phase.

How to teach this in 30 seconds

Try this analogy: Preparation is like crouching down at the starting line right before a race begins.

Ask your child: How do you get your body ready before you throw a ball?

Common mix-up: Kids might think you just start moving without thinking. The key is that good movement starts with a 'get ready' step first, like bending your knees to get steady.

Examples

  • Crouching slightly before you jump up to touch something high.
  • Getting your feet shoulder-width apart before you swing a bat.

preparation is a term used in Ontario’s Kindergarten to Grade 8 curriculum.
